This realtor just called me about an apartment, I talked to her almost two months ago. The apartment was beautiful...with all the artsy fartsy shit I love - high ceilings, original super deep claw foot tub, original hard wood flooring, original crown molding, mantels and fire place...glass tiles in the bathroom with this art deco sink...all stainless steel appliances (double fridge, microwave, dishwasher, stove) and a washer and dryer. It even had the original glass door knobs (i notice things like that!) and at 1100 square feet, I wasn't too surprised at the $2200 rental amount. I just had no intention of paying that much. That's more than my condo's mortgage, monthly maintenance, property insurance and monthly property taxes COMBINED. No way I would pay that much to RENT and definitely not for that area. I remember thinking anyone who paid that much money to live up on Sugar Hill was out of their damn mind!!
The apartment itself was worth that much, but you know what they say in real estate...LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION!! The owner over renovated for the area, so I was not surprised to hear the realtor tell me that the owner had lowered the price significantly to $1700. After years of abuse in the 70's and 80's, that area is seeing some big changes, but it's still not there exactly in a place to command that much rent yet. I told the realtor I already found a place and thanked her for calling.
I wouldnt be surprised to hear the owner had to reduce it again. This scares me a little bit though. I'm just hoping I don't run into the same problem when I rent out the condo.
Speaking of renting out the condo...my niece asked if she could rent the place with her boyfriend. I never laughed so hard lololololol. Let's see...my niece is all of EIGHTEEN...she doesn't work...doesn't go to school and neither does her boyfriend. And I would rent them the apartment...because...why?????? I wouldn't!
Somehow she has a section eight voucher though...if it gets hard out here for a pimpette...I'll take what I can get though.

yeah clearly your relationship w/your niece (& her momma maybe) wouldn't survive you having to kick her out of that condo! (i bet that section 8 voucher looks niiiice tho! lol) no job for her or her bf???? riiiiight.
i am SO not ready to live in NYC & pay those real estate prices yet. esp. since i love all that stuff you mentioned! the house you could get in charlotte at that price would be unreal!
I went to a friends house in Sugar Hill and the food was just no good. The macaroni was soggy the peas were mush and the chicken taste like wood... Oh wait, that was something else.
idk.. section 8 means guaranteed rent lol i have a firm policy against doing business with family though. It makes holidays awkward when your asking for money over the stuffing.
NYC rental prices make me want to cry.
Hmmm...what are was this apt in?
I can't believe your neice. I thing I've learned: never do business with family. No sir!
The real estate agent and owner are reaching toward the desperation point. I've dealt with Section 8 and it works well, as long as the tenant pays their portion. In my case, the tenant never paid their portion and felt I was being cruel when I had to evict them. I can only imagine what your niece will say if you rent to a working individual w/Sect.8.
When money is involved, GIVE to family. Never put them in a position of oweing you. They are the first to welch on a debt.
You already know better!
No family! No! No! No! I don't blame you not one bit.
Geez, if I move to NYC, I'd have to live in my car for while. The rent! Ick!
