Thursday Thirteen - Precious

This is inspired by the book, “Push”, which is now a movie called "Precious".

This is thirteen things about this book that shocked me.

1 – The movie is coming out this week (I think Friday). Why is this shocking? Well I never would have thought this would make it to the big screen. It's really gritty and ugly...definitely more shocking then Bastard out of Carolina and The Color Purple...so yeah I'm shocked...excited and hoping to see it this weekend though.

2 - The illiterate way the book is written…but quickly you realize this is just because it’s completely from the mind of an illiterate teenager. Here's a passage: "I go home. I'm so lonely there. I never notice before. I'm so busy getting beat, cooking, cleaning, pussy and asshole either hurting or popping. School I a joke; black monster, big Bertha, Blimp B54 where you? 'N the TVs in my head always static on, flipping picture. So much pain, shame. Mama give me orders, Daddy porno talk me, school never did learn me."

3 - She’s 16…only in the 8th grade, but can’t read or write (doesn't even know her ABCs), yet she's in "regular" classes and receives no additional learning assistance.

4 - One of her teachers actually said she was his "brightest student", even though Precious admits to doing nothing but sitting in his class staring in to space.

5 - She’s pregnant…by her father

6 - This is her second child…by her father!!

6 – She sometimes enjoys sex with him…even though she hates enjoying it.

7 - She delivered the first child…at 12.

8 - She is being molested…by her mother as well

9 - The first time her father “touched” her…she was still in diapers

10 - I was mostly shocked that a mother could know her child is being molested and blame the child. I know this is JUST a fiction story, but I was talking to a friend about this once. She told me her stepfather had been molesting her for years. At first her mother didn't know, by the time she was about 13, it was becoming obvious that something was going on. Her mother beat and blamed her for enticing the guy (AT SEVEN YEARS OLD)......yet she stayed with the man.

11 - I was shocked to find myself laughing out loud as I read some of it. I know that sounds bad, but you have to read the book. She's dealt a helluva bad hand, but chick has a wicked sense of humor without even trying.

12 - Through all of this dysfunction (much more I haven't mentioned), Precious somehow pushes on, but...

13 – I was shocked at the ending...I expected more...needed to know more.

I can't read this book, and I cannot watch the movie. I just KNOW it would toss me into an emotional whirlwind. I can't fathom how a parent molests a child. Weird and sick as hell. *shuddering*

My BFF and I are going to see the movie Saturday night and I'm a little afraid of seeing it. Like Queen of my Castle, I'm afraid of the emotional turmoil

I read the book 2 months ago in anticipation..Very emotional but a GREAT READ! Im thinking about going to the midnight showing at th Arclight tonight!! My reading buddy couldn't finish the book because some of the experiences were too real so I was all alone. Im sure I'll be in the back of the theater boo hoo-ing like I was when I went to go see "My sister's keeper".

Looking forward to seeing the movie...Looks like it's gonna be a good one!

I read the book too. Very emotional. I think I may need to see the movie when it comes on DVD.

When I first began working as a children's librarian, this book never stayed on the shelf. All copies were checked out and rarely returned. I read an excerpt and could go no further---It reminded me of the Bluest Eye. I couldn't read that book either. There was so much pain in the excerpt, I just couldn't go there.

This title still has one of the highest--no return rates---

I have been debating going to see this tomorrow night because I remember how heavy that book was. I'm still undecided but when you go see it, let us know if it stays true to the book.
